Maybe you’ve seen the UAVs on the news- Unmanned Aerial Vehicles used by the military to provide reconnaissance and sometimes actual mayhem-producing missiles fired from a clear blue sky. Did you you know that UAVs flying over hot spots in the middle east are piloted by people right here in places like North Dakota and Nevada.
While not exactly like weaponized war UAVs, flying drones are becoming more commonplace in the logistics industry. In warehouses, commodities are sometimes stacked 20-30 feet up; if you want to know what’s up there, a person with a scanner has to drive a lift to the spot, elevate it to the correct height, scan the labels and come back down. Sometimes ladders are used, but OSHA frowns on that sort of thing.
A small flying drone can find items in a warehouse in a fraction of the time and in a much safer manner. The pilot doesn’t even have to be on the premises and information about a carton, pallet or container can be on screen in moments! Other uses for these flying robots in logistics includes security patrolling, inventory in a cargo yard, and moving items in short hops.
